The Salomon XT-6 explained: where it came from, the tech, how it fits, Gore-Tex and Expanse versions, XT-6 vs XT-4 vs ACS Pro, and how to style it.

The Salomon XT-6 is a trail running shoe, first released in 2013 for ultra-distance racing, that became one of the defining sneakers of gorpcore. It is built around a one-pull Quicklace, a SensiFit cage that wraps the midfoot, a stable chassis and a grippy Contagrip outsole, which is why it feels locked-in and sure-footed rather than soft. It fits close to true to size but narrow, so wide feet should go half a size up. It is good for walking and everyday wear, and the Gore-Tex version adds waterproofing for wet cities.
Below: where it came from, what the tech actually does, the versions worth knowing and how to wear it without looking like you are about to run 100 kilometres.
Where the XT-6 came from
The XT-6 is the latest step in a family that runs back through the XT-5, the XT-4 and, before them, the XT Wings, which Salomon adapted for its top trail athletes. The XT-6 itself debuted in 2013, developed by Salomon's S/LAB team for elite ultra-trail runners such as Kilian Jornet and François D'haene. The brief was long distances over rough ground: a shoe that stays stable when your legs are tired and the terrain is uneven.
It did that job well, but the second life is the one most people know. Around 2020 and 2021 the XT-6 was picked up by young people in Paris and then by fashion buyers everywhere, often in muted or odd colourways rather than the bright race versions. A wave of collaborations and seasonal colours followed, and the XT-6 became the shoe most associated with the gorpcore look: technical outdoor kit worn in the city.
The tech, in plain words
- Quicklace. A thin, tough cord with a sliding lock instead of normal laces. One pull tightens the whole shoe and the spare tucks into a pocket on the tongue. It is fast, it does not come undone, and it is half the look.
- SensiFit. The structured cage that runs from the sole up around the midfoot, holding your foot in place on uneven ground. It is what gives the XT-6 its distinctive side lines.
- EndoFit. An inner sleeve that hugs the foot, so the shoe feels like one piece rather than a loose upper.
- Agile Chassis System and EnergyCell. The chassis sits in the midsole for stability; the EnergyCell foam above it absorbs impact. The ride is supportive and precise, not plush.
- Contagrip. Salomon's rubber outsole compound, made for grip on wet rock, mud and trail. In town it means very good grip on wet pavements.
Is the Salomon XT-6 good for walking?
Yes. Built for long days on foot, the XT-6 is stable, grippy and supportive, and the Quicklace means you never retie. It does not feel as soft as a lifestyle runner with a thick foam sole; it is firmer and more locked-in. If you like a snug, precise fit, it is a great all-day walking shoe. If you want something cushier, look at HOKA, whose thick soles are built for that.
XT-6 sizing
Most retailers and wearers say the XT-6 fits close to true to size, but narrow and snug through the midfoot.
- Normal or slim feet: your usual size.
- Wide feet, or between sizes: go half a size up.
- Thick socks or winter wear: half up is sensible too.
Salomon's box sizes and its size chart do not always match other brands exactly, so compare your usual size in centimetres or Mondopoint with the shop's chart before you buy.
The versions worth knowing
XT-6 Gore-Tex
The XT-6 GTX adds a Gore-Tex waterproof membrane. It keeps your feet dry in rain and puddles, but like any waterproof shoe it is less breathable and a little warmer. Choose it if you live somewhere wet or wear your XT-6s through winter; stick with the regular one for summer and warm climates.
XT-6 Expanse
The Expanse is the city version: a stitched upper of mesh and textile panels with a more retro, traditional look, and an OrthoLite insole. It keeps the XT-6 sole and Quicklace but reads less technical. A good pick if the standard XT-6 looks too "trail" for you.
XT-6 Advanced and S/LAB
Salomon sells the XT-6 under its lifestyle "Advanced" label and still releases S/LAB performance versions such as the XT-6 Softground. For everyday wear the standard and Advanced pairs are the ones to compare.
XT-6 vs XT-4 vs ACS Pro
- XT-6: the most cushioned and technical-feeling of the three, with clean, solid colour-blocking. The all-rounder.
- XT-4 (often sold as XT-4 OG): the older model. Lighter but bulkier-looking, with a more early-2000s shape and often bolder colourways. Runs narrow, so wide feet should go half up.
- ACS Pro: another trail model built around Salomon's ACS chassis with a more retro, overlay-heavy look. A good alternative if you want something less common than the XT-6.
If you want one Salomon to start with, buy the XT-6. If you already own one, the XT-4 or ACS Pro gives you a different shape.
How to style the Salomon XT-6
The XT-6 is a busy, technical shoe, so it works best with clothes that are either simple or deliberately outdoorsy.
- Wide trousers. Baggy cargos, climbing pants or relaxed jeans that sit on top of the shoe. Gramicci climbing pants and men's trousers in a wide cut are the classic pairing. Skinny trousers make the shoe look huge.
- Shorts and long socks. In summer, a pair of nylon or cotton shorts with visible socks is very much the look.
- Technical layers. A shell from Arc'teryx, Goldwin or The North Face leans fully into gorpcore.
- Against tailoring. A muted XT-6 under wide pleated trousers and a simple knit or chore coat is the more grown-up version, and the one Paris made famous.
Colour helps: black, grey or earthy colourways are the easiest to wear every day; brights are for when the shoe is the point of the outfit.
Compare XT-6 prices and sizes
The same XT-6 colourway is often stocked by several shops at different prices, and popular sizes sell out unevenly. Questions people ask
Do Salomon XT-6 run small?
They fit close to true to size but narrow. If you have wide feet or are between sizes, go half a size up.
Is the Salomon XT-6 waterproof?
The standard XT-6 is not; its mesh upper lets water in. The XT-6 Gore-Tex (GTX) version has a waterproof membrane.
What is the difference between the XT-6 and the XT-6 Expanse?
The Expanse is a city-focused version with a stitched mesh and textile upper and a more retro look. It keeps the XT-6 sole and Quicklace.
Is the XT-6 a running shoe?
It was designed as an ultra-distance trail running shoe and still works as one, but most people now wear it as an everyday sneaker.
How do you tighten Quicklace?
Pull the cord through the lock until the shoe is snug, slide the lock down, and tuck the spare cord into the pocket on the tongue. To loosen, pinch the lock and pull the laces apart.
